A youth theater camp with a touch of comedy is set to debut at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear – “Commedia Dell’ Arte” – The Comedy of Art.

The camp, which follows a form of theater originating in Italy, is being presented by the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission for students in grades six through 12. Award-winning theater educator Sarah Rosenberg of New York - where she directs local theaters in the Bronx and California – where she teaches summer theater at Stanford University, will be overseeing the camp. She will teach participants various aspects of acting – such as learning how to express themselves and exploring performance from a fun improvisation style.

Along with developing their acting skills, students will learn about the behind-the-scenes aspect of theater that includes sound, lighting, costuming and set design.

“We’re looking to expand our community theater opportunities, and we’re excited to have Sarah Rosenberg be a part of our efforts,” said Guylene Ozlanski, arts and culture coordinator for the city of Goodyear. “Our hope is to spur enough interest to begin a community theater group.”

On the last day of camp, the students will present an evening performance of Androcles and the Lion before a live audience from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Registration for “Commedia Dell’ Arte” takes place at Goodyear Parks and Recreation Office, 3075 North Litchfield Road between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through July 3.
