Goodyear, Ariz. (June 23, 2017) – According to Centers for Disease Control, about one in five people who die from drowning are children younger than 14 years old; and children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates with most occurring in home swimming pools.

Taking part in formal swimming lessons reduces the risk of drowning. When a drowning does occur, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) performed by bystanders has been shown to save lives and improve outcomes of the victims. The more quickly CPR is started, the better the chance of improved outcomes.

To help ensure a safe summer, the city of Goodyear offers swimming lessons and CPR certification classes. Swimming lessons for all ages are held at Goodyear Community Pool, 430 E. Loma Linda Blvd. Certified instructors teach the American Red Cross ‘Learn to Swim’ program. The cost for lessons is $40 for Goodyear residents and $50 for non-residents. Classes are offered in the morning and evening starting July 3 – July 14 and July 17 – July 28. Lessons typically last 30 minutes for each session over the two-week period.

The city’s CPR class, open to anyone age 16 years and older, provides a two-year certification that meets OSHA and state childcare licensing requirements. The class is offered Tuesday, July 11 and Tuesday, Aug. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. The fee for the class is $28 and pre-registration is required.

For more information and to sign up for classes, call the city of Goodyear Recreation Office at 623-882-7525 or visit
