Ballet Master offers an inside look at ‘Ballet Under the Stars’


Presentation features history of ballet, personal insights

“An Inside Look: Ballet Under the Stars with Ballet Arizona”

–Ballet Master and Arizona native Joseph Cavanaugh shares his unique insights into Ballet Under the Stars in this exciting look at the world of ballet. Scheduled for Sept. 30 in Estrella, Ballet Under the Stars is an opportunity for the community to experience the joys of the dance.

During the lecture Joseph will share his story; the history of ballet; as well some of the secrets behind bringing ballet on an outdoor tour. Joseph develops and implements educational and community programming for the group.

Having pursued his professional training at the Virginia School of the Arts and later graduating with honors from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Professional Division, Cavanaugh has performed with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in Canada. His Balanchine repertoire includes principle roles in Agon, Serenade, Stravinsky Violin Concerto, and Movements for Piano and Orchestra. He has worked with and performed for such choreographers as Dwight Rhoden, Jordan Morris, Alejandro Cerrudo, and Alexei Ratmansky.

Since joining Ballet Arizona in 2001, Joseph has originated featured roles in Ib Andersen’s Elevations, Mosaik, 2B, PlayA Midsummer Night’s Dream and in Interplays by Vladimir Angelov. He has danced soloist and principal roles in Swan LakeGiselle (Hilarion), Twyla Tharp’s The Golden Section, Dwight Rhoden’s Ave Maria, Jerome Robbins’s In the Night,and Polyphonia by Christopher Wheeldon.

Joseph has shared his love for ballet by teaching around the United States and Canada for the past 15 years and helping to create The Artist Relief Fund (501c3) in 2013, which support the dancers of Ballet Arizona in times of extended injury, personal hardship, and career transition. 

The Hot Coffee Arts & Culture lecture series is held the last Tuesday of every month from January through October at 7 p.m. in Total Wine and More, 1416 N. Litchfield Road. Light refreshments are served. Parking and admission are free. For more information, visit
