Goodyear Fire connects the dots with math
Goodyear, Ariz. (April 10, 2018) – Every high school student asks the same question: when will I ever use calculus in real life?
The Goodyear Fire Department has the answer: engineer hydraulics and drug calculations.
In response to a request from Estrella Foothills High School Math Teacher Kimberly Kane, Goodyear Fire Chief Paul Luizzi and Fire Administrative Services Manager Lisa Neagle presented to her class how statistics are used in the fire service.
The response from the students was so positive that Chief Luizzi was invited to do the same for the calculus class. Rather than just talk about it, the class took a field trip to Fire Station 182 with Captain Tim Rayburn, where they got to learn about the application of math in real life scenarios and see the equipment in action.
“Sometimes you need hands-on training to connect the dots between what you learn in school and how it’s applied in real life,” said Chief Luizzi.
Goodyear Firefighter Mike Murphy demonstrates to students from Estrella Foothills High School how math is applied in the fire service.
