Veterans honored through annual ceremony, flag garden
Goodyear, Ariz. (Oct. 30, 2018) – The community is invited to join Goodyear officials in the annual Tribute to Veterans ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 S. Ballpark Way.
A formal presentation begins at 3 p.m. with opening remarks by Mayor Georgia Lord. Brig. Gen. Todd Canterbury, commander of the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base, also is scheduled to appear along with a flyover by the base’s fighter jets.
This year, the city will recognize all World War II veterans in attendance with a special gift as a part of the formal tribute.
“We want to honor those veterans who witnessed the terrors and triumphs of a war that took place some 75 years ago,” said Mayor Lord.
According to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 558,000 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II were alive in 2017.
Members of the public can show their support by personalizing a message on a flag and planting it in the interactive garden. They also will be treated to a complimentary bar-b-que.
The day of tribute will feature a variety of ways to honor our veterans and their families, including:
- Patriotic displays
- Mobile museum
- Patriotic-themed youth performances
