Citizen Police Academy
The Goodyear Police Department invites you to participate
The Citizen Police Academy is a revolutionary concept in law enforcement and community relations. The curriculum and teaching methods are similar to the traditional police academy, but its students are not potential police officers. They are bankers, attorneys, city council members, judges, business owners, homemakers, media representatives, and neighborhood watchers, as well as Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS).
Purpose of the Academy
The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to facilitate a better understanding, through education, between citizens and police. The academy is creating a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed citizens with the potential of influencing public opinion regarding police practices and services. For these reasons, much time and energy has been devoted to developing an informative overview of the fundamentals of police affairs. During the 12-week course, students meet once a week for three hours. Course topics include virtually every aspect of police work, and are taught by both management and non-management representatives of the department.
Although graduates of the academy will not be ready for street patrol, they will be familiar with operations of the Goodyear Police Department, and will have gained a deeper understanding of the problems encountered by Goodyear police officers. Graduates will also have completed, on a voluntary basis, an 8-hour tour of duty with a patrol officer.
The 12-week course begins on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 and runs through Wednesday, June 9, 2010. The classes will be held every Wednesday night from 6:00-9:00 PM.
Applications may be submitted online or downloaded and filled out manually. However, applications are only taken during the specified enrollment period.
Deadline EXTENDED to submit your application is Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
